Project Description

Join the Detroit Spartans and Friends of the Rouge to plant trees this spring and make a difference for a better Rouge River! 

No prior experience is necessary. Each workday will begin with a 30-minute overview and planting instructions.The project is happening on a 6-mile stretch of the Lower Rouge River between S John Hix Road and John Daly Street, north of Michigan Avenue in the Inkster area. Our exact work location each day will depend on the ongoing progress of previous days planting. Registered volunteers will be emailed their specific meeting/parking instructions a few days prior to their scheduled workday.

Thank you for being a part of this important reforestation project – restoring the health of the Rouge River watershed for a flood-resilient and clean water future for Southeast Michigan.

Workday location: A 6-mile stretch of the Lower Rouge River between John Daly Rd. and John Hix Rd.

Registered volunteers will be emailed the specific meeting/parking instructions a few days prior to their scheduled workday.

Accessibility and Difficulty: One to three miles of walking each workday, sometimes on uneven terrain. Low to medium effort, standing, bending, lifting 5-15 pounds. Ground may be wet and slippery. Some forested areas may have dense underbrush to walk through.

  • Children under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult
  • Participants should wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather conditions. Layering clothing is recommended. Please bring a refillable water bottle if you have one.

About Friends of the Rouge

Friends of the Rouge (FOTR) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in 1986 to raise awareness about the need to clean up the Rouge River in southeast Michigan.

MIssion: To restore, protect, and enhance the Rouge River watershed through stewardship, education, and collaboration.

Vision: We envision a future where a clean and vibrant Rouge River is the center of our community.  Individual and community actions protect and improve the health of the Rouge River, assuring that its natural, economic, and recreational value enhances the quality of life in the Rouge River ecosystem.
