Project Description

Duties:  Trail maintenance and outdoor seasonal work.

About: Join us for a stewardship day at Capital City Bird Sanctuary, northwest of downtown Lansing! This little-known preserve is a great place to spot birds such as Eastern Bluebird, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Warbling Vireo, and Eastern Kingbird - even while working. Help us protect this urban nature preserve by removing invasive woody shrubs and encouraging native habitats. Think of this workday as "wild gardening" — mildly strenuous work that involves hiking around the sanctuary and cutting down invasive woody shrubs with hand pruners or hand saws, often in challenging locations. Additional tasks may include: general trail maintenance and cutting back overhanging plants from trails, cleaning out bird nesting boxes, or weeding in the native wildflower garden. A good workout is guaranteed! We do take many snack and water breaks. Please come prepared for outdoor work; wear long pants, long sleeves, close-toed shoes, and a hat. Bring water, snacks, insect repellent, and sunscreen, although we will have extras on hand. No experience necessary, and we will provide all tools.
