Project Description

Feeding South Dakota will be conducting its annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway in Sioux Falls on Saturday, November 20, 2021. There are always a huge number of families that begin lining up in the early morning hours. We will be part of the team of volunteers that helps to manage the traffic to keep everyone safe and informed.

NOTE: This opportunity is NOT at the Feeding South Dakota warehouse on N. Westport Ave. You will need to go to the site of the Sioux Falls Thanksgiving Giveaway - Concrete Materials - located at 1305 N. Louise Ave. Volunteers should park on the south side of the building and enter the south door to check in.

Directions:

Volunteers should enter the Concrete Materials property off Louise Avenue.  A volunteer will direct you to the appropriate parking area. Please enter the south door and check-in inside the building.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks to help with the Thanksgiving Giveaway. The distribution will be held from 8 a.m. to approximately 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 20th. This opportunity includes working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Volunteer duties may include:

  • Directing traffic and greeting the public

Support/Training:

Please plan for inclement weather. We encourage you to dress in layers and wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe/closed-heel shoes. Volunteers will be given instructions and training upon arrival and will have staff support and supervision throughout their shift.

Volunteers working around traffic will be given additional safety gear to wear. Upon your arrival, you will sign our volunteer waiver form.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to stand and walk for 2-3 hours at a time
  • Work will be outdoors in winter weather. Please dress accordingly to stay warm.

Age Requirements:

This position will be working outdoors in a parking lot around vehicle traffic. For safety reasons, all volunteers must be 11 years or older. Volunteers under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Health/Safety:

At Feeding South Dakota, there is no higher priority than the safety of our volunteers and the people we serve. We strive to maintain clean facilities and follow best practices for food safety. We are taking extra precautions, including increased cleaning of surfaces throughout the day, and emphasizing frequent hand washing, use of hand sanitizer and changing of gloves.

Feeding South Dakota protocol related to COVID-19:

  • In outdoor and indoor settings (including distribution centers, breakrooms, hallways, and other common areas) fully vaccinated individuals may interact without a face covering.
  • Vaccinated individuals who desire to minimize their risk may also continue to wear a face covering if they choose to do so.
  • Unvaccinated individuals are encouraged to wear a face covering when working in groups.
  • Individuals who are immunocompromised should continue to wear a mask even if they are vaccinated.
  • Symptomatic individuals, regardless of immunization status, should stay home and we would be happy to help schedule a future volunteer opportunity.

About Feeding South Dakota

You have read our statistics on hunger in South Dakota. You have given cans to our food drives. You may have even donated your time to our organization.

So who are we? We are Feeding South Dakota. We are a hunger relief organization and we are fighting daily to eliminate hunger in this state. Most importantly, we are doing it with your help.

In FY21, Feeding South Dakota as a whole distributed 14.8 million pounds of food in the fight against hunger. Our partnership with Feeding America provides us with access to millions of pounds of food product that is donated by corporations all across America. It is through this affiliation that we are able to provide a wider variety of store shelf quality food to our organizations.

Every single week, Feeding South Dakota assists in providing temporary food assistance to approximately 21,000 hungry individuals and families in our state and our BackPack Program gives food every weekend to over 4,500 kids who otherwise might go hungry.

Your donations of money, food, and time allow Feeding South Dakota to positively impact thousands of people every year. Real people. Real men, real women and real children who need your help and whose lives are changed when they receive it.

We are Feeding South Dakota. Our story is a story of hope. It is a story of undying optimism. And it is a story that will not end until we have eliminated hunger in the state forever.

Will you join us?
