Orientation:
A Volunteer Coordinator will start you off with a brief orientation and tour of our facilities. Please be on time! If you decide to fill out waivers on site, please arrive a few minutes early to do so.
What you'll be doing:
Food Gatherers rescues several tons of food daily that volunteers help us process, inspect, and sort. Since we rely on donations from the community, we cannot predict what we will be getting from one day to the next, therefore specific tasks are often not determined until the day of the shift. In general, volunteers typically sort rescued foods (such as produce), repackage bulk foods, or get boxes with pre-selected items packed for distribution.
Attire:
-
You must wear sensible closed-toed shoes (no sandals) and a shirt with t-shirt length sleeves or longer / no midriff (no tank tops, sleeveless shirts, or crop tops).
- A head covering (hat, beanie, bandana, etc.) is required for most tasks. We will provide hairnets if you need them.
-
You may be in the Green Room which is temperature controlled around 50F. It’s a good idea to bring an extra layer such as a sweatshirt. Also, keep in mind you may be working with open food and things can get a bit messy.
If you are wearing clothing that does not comply with these guidelines, you will not be able to volunteer.
Contact Information:
If you have any questions regarding your volunteer shift, contact Ben, your local club Vice-President (734-972-2205, bwegryn@live.com).

About Food Gatherers
Food Gatherers exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community.
We rescue local food and leverage state and national food resources for hunger relief. We lead a network of hunger relief providers and engage the public in the fight against hunger. We create and sustain innovative new food programs in response to emerging needs. We recognize that hunger will not be solved through the provision of food alone, so we advocate for policies and system changes to create an equitable food system.
