Have you or a loved one ever needed to receive a blood transfusion as part of emergency or routine medical care? Hospitals rely on constant blood supplies for cancer care, surgeries, trauma, blood disorders, and childbirth; reduced donations force cutbacks to hospitals, especially impacting Type O supplies essential for emergencies.
Did you know the American Red Cross is experiencing ongoing blood shortages due to a long-term decline in donors (down 40% over two decades), seasonal disruptions, climate-driven disasters, pandemic-related reductions in workplace/school drives, and fewer younger donors?
Michigan State University is partnering with Abbott and the Big Ten in the “We Give Blood” competition (Aug 27–Dec 5) to mobilize students, fans, and alumni nationwide. Donors can receive a limited-edition MSU T-shirt from Homefield and can track MSU’s standing on a live leaderboard at BigTen.org/Abbott; the winning school, announced Dec 6 at the Big Ten Championship Game, will earn $1M from Abbott to support student/community health.
