About Basilica of Sainte Anne

About the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit

Founded in 1701 alongside the founding of Detroit, the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit is the second-oldest continuously operating Catholic parish in the United States. What began as a small chapel built by French settlers has grown into a treasured spiritual, historical, and cultural landmark for the city and the nation.

The current church, built in 1886, preserves important artifacts from earlier structures, including Detroit’s oldest stained glass and devotional items connected to centuries of faith and healing. The basilica is also the final resting place of Fr. Gabriel Richard, a key figure in Detroit’s early history and the author of the city’s motto, “We hope for better things; it will rise from the ashes.”

Today, Ste. Anne is a vibrant, multi-ethnic, bilingual parish and a place of pilgrimage, prayer, and community. In 2020, Pope Francis designated Ste. Anne as a minor basilica—one of only a few in Michigan—recognizing its importance in the life of the Church. In 2025, the basilica entered an historic partnership with The Catholic Initiative to support its restoration and ensure its legacy for generations to come.

Inspired by its patroness, Sainte Anne, the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit continues its mission to welcome all people, foster faith, and serve as a place of healing, devotion, and hope.
