Project Description

Attendees to this project will view a video about the FAME Mentor Program and the process of becoming a mentor to a foster youth alumnus attending MSU, as well as for MSU students who were in kinship care, have experienced homelessness, or are otherwise independent. Those who wish to become a FAME Mentor will then complete and submit applications for the program.

***Participants will receive a Zoom link and password the evening of Friday, April 16 that can be used to view the video training at 3:00 p.m. EDT on April 17.  The video link will be shared after the training for those that were unable to attend.***

About FAME and its Mentor Program

FAME exists to provide support and resources to these students during their time at MSU to help them be successful during their collegiate experience on MSU's campus and during their transition to becoming MSU alumni. Read more about FAME by clicking the 'Charity Website' link below.

A specific way that FAME support students is by matching them with mentors during their time at MSU. A mentor is seen as an emotional/social/academic and career-based support person who meets with the student each month for at least 4 hours. Typical activities that mentors and students do together can include resume writing, job searching, attending events on campus and within the community, meeting up for coffee, trying out new activities together, etc. The mentor relationship is based on the needs and goals of the individual student.

Some requirements for potential mentors:

  • Must have a bachelor's degree
  • Must be available 4 hours a month to meet with student for at least one calendar year. *Due to COVID-19, in-person meetings are NOT mandatory at this time.*
  • Must commit to completing a mentor report each month
  • Must complete the following: application/reference checks, background checks and mandatory trainings
