Help the MSU Alumni Band spread Spartan Music around the globe!

In the spirit of Spartans Serve week, please join the MSU Alumni Band Spread Music around the globe by volunteering with a local music organization!

Help copy music, organize instruments, or just talk with a local band program about your music experience!

If you're in the East Lansing Area we've partnered with the MSU Community Music School to provide volunteers to help with music programs!

About MSU Community Music School

Michigan State University’s (MSU) Community Music Schools in East Lansing (CMS) and Detroit (CMS-D) are outreach units of the MSU College of Music. CMS and CMS-D bring music education and music therapy to individuals of all ages and abilities.

Music has the ability to transform lives. Therapy clients have spoken their first words during music sessions. Young music students who were struggling academically, have found the confidence and resolve to succeed in school. Other students have found their professional calling and gone on to study music at the collegiate level. Adults who once felt isolated have found a community and a sense of belonging.

Since its founding in 1993, CMS in East Lansing has offerered music and its inherent possibilities to everyone in the community regardless of age, ability or income. CMS offers private lessons on over twenty different instruments, more than fifteen classes and ensembles, five different summer camps, and music therapy services. Students and clients range in age from infancy to 90+ years of age. Financial aid is offered to students with need.

In fall 2009, a second CMS opened in Detroit’s Cultural Corridor to serve Metro Detroit residents. CMS-D offers youth and adult classes and ensembles. Students can participate in lessons for any instrument, voice, jazz, concert band, Gospel choir, Early Childhood Music or music therapy. A variety of summer camps are offered for youth. Programs continue to be added in response to community need (2013 Strategic Plan).
