About Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to end breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. The foundation was founded in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in memory of her sister, Susan Goodman Komen, who died from breast cancer at age 36.

The foundation's mission is to save lives by: Investing in research to prevent and cure breast cancer, Meeting critical needs in communities, Advancing education, Screening, and Treatment.

The foundation has raised more than $2 billion for patient outreach and over $1 billion for cancer research. It has affiliates in over 100 US cities and tens of thousands of volunteers. The foundation's Race for the Cure is one of the largest breast cancer awareness events in the world, and the pink ribbon is synonymous with the cause.

The foundation offers a breast care helpline with free support from oncology social workers and guidance to local resources. It also has a Financial Assistance Program to help people get the treatment they need.
