Project Description

Join the Detroit Spartans and the Detroit Free Press for the Detroit Free Press Marathon.  The event will take place the morning of October 20, 2024. Detroit Free Press Marathon volunteers are vital to making our races successful. The marathon volunteer group is a dedicated and encouraging bunch that provides support to our participants and staff.

Volunteer jobs include distributing bibs and goodie bags prior to race day, communicating to runners at the start line, distributing water throughout the course, directing runners at various points during the races, and distributing medals at the finish line. The marathon recruits more than 3,000 volunteers. So, it is a perfect opportunity for large groups such as sports teams, schools, or clubs looking to fulfill community service hours. We are happy to work with your group to ensure a great volunteer experience!

Shifts are dependent on your choice of volunteer job and start anywhere from 5am to 9:45AM.

Volunteers have the option to sign up for multiple different jobs including;Start/Finish Line volunteers, Course Monitors, Gear Check, Relay Exchange

  • Start/Finish Line:  Start Line Volunteers will help separate the waves of runners and direct them to the correct wave and lead them forward at the assigned start time.
  • Course Monitors: This key position observes conditions on the course, including runners, spectators, and traffic.
  • Gear Check: Help receive runners' bags, sort in numerical order and return to runner upon completion of their run.
  • Relay Exchange: The relay exchange volunteer must maintain the integrity of the relay exchange and surrounding area. This will allow the relay runners make clean and unobstructed handoffs. You must also keep the participant moving through the zone to avoid congestion in the exchange. Also provide fluids and heat sheets to finished relay participants
  • You MUST sign up directly on the Detroit Marathon website to volunteer https://detroitmarathon.enmotive.com/events/volunteer/2024-detroit-free-press-marathon_1

About Detroit Free Press Marathon

he Detroit Free Press Marathon has a storied history, and we’re excited for you to be a part of it.

In 1978, Neal Shine watched the Falmouth Road Race and was overwhelmed by what he saw. As managing editor of the Detroit Free Press, he suggested the newspaper sponsor something similar in Detroit. Since then, race directors, staff, volunteers, sponsors and participants have helped grow the event into Michigan’s largest (and we argue best) road race.

Participants from Michigan, the United States and all over the world travel each year to Detroit to run with us.

Our race has something for everyone — from elite runners to casual walkers, from seasoned marathoners to newbies. And by offering races in a variety of distances, including a full marathon, two half-marathons, disabilities and relay divisions, a 5k walk/run, a competitive 1-mile and a Kids Fun Run, our goal is to give every participant a once-in-a-lifetime experience … every year!

The only way we can make our weekend of events happen is with the phenomenal support of race volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors.
